Lagos shuts down Ikoyi building due to environmental concerns from raw waste dumping

A property located at No. 5, Manuwa St., Ikoyi, has been sealed off by the Lagos State Government due to allegations of releasing untreated sewage into a nearby canal through a malfunctioning sewage treatment plant.

This enforcement action was taken on Wednesday by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, prompted by complaints from local residents and investigations that substantiated the claims of environmental wrongdoing, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, announced the development on his official X handle, stating that the property was sealed due to the intentional and ongoing discharge of untreated sewage into the canal via a non-functional sewage treatment plant.

The premises was also found to be maintained in an unsanitary condition, leading to unpleasant odors, environmental disturbance, and potential risks to public health, according to Wahab.

The commissioner explained that the enforcement action followed public complaints and subsequent investigations that confirmed the reported infractions, emphasizing the importance of complying with approved wastewater management practices to safeguard public health and the environment.

Wahab cautioned that those who fail to comply would face suitable penalties and possible prosecution, in accordance with the state's environmental laws, while reaffirming the state government's commitment to upholding environmental regulations and maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment throughout Lagos.
