Lagos saves expectant mother who lost consciousness, reunites her and newborn with Plateau State authorities

A dramatic rescue effort in Lagos has saved the life of a 22-year-old pregnant woman, Tingni Kindness, who was found unconscious on a street and has now been reunited with the Plateau State Government, thanks to the Lagos State emergency healthcare intervention programme.

Kindness was discovered in the Allen area of Lagos on June 6 and rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, after the Lagos State Health Management Agency’s Assistance in Distress, LASHMA-AID, received an emergency alert from the Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS.

Following emergency treatment and stabilisation by doctors at LASUTH, Kindness remained under medical care until June 21, when she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, marking a successful outcome for the programme.

A ceremony was held at LASUTH, Ikeja, where Lagos State officially handed over the mother and her newborn to officials of the Plateau State Government for further rehabilitation and care.

According to Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, Permanent Secretary of LASHMA, the agency responded promptly to the distress call, which was received at about 9 p.m. on June 6, and swiftly secured a bed space at LASUTH for Kindness.

Zamba explained that LASHMA-AID immediately sprang into action upon receiving the alert, contacting LASUTH to confirm bed space, and then transferring Kindness to the hospital for emergency treatment, which commenced without delay.

The successful rescue, Zamba noted, highlights the effectiveness of the Executive Order signed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, guaranteeing emergency stabilisation for residents facing life-threatening situations, regardless of their financial status.

Zamba commended LASUTH and drew attention to the Lagos State Government's efforts in providing emergency services to ILERA EKO enrollees and vulnerable residents, assuring that the programme would continue to provide life-saving care.

The Permanent Secretary also appealed to the Plateau State Government to provide accommodation and economic support to the young mother, who has no source of livelihood, to enable her to care for her baby.

Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, Chief Medical Director of LASUTH, revealed that Kindness was unconscious but not in labour when she arrived at the hospital, and that the hospital's managed care commenced immediately to stabilise her.

As the hospital was making arrangements to transfer Kindness to a shelter due to her lack of accommodation, she went into labour and successfully delivered her baby girl, Fabamwo explained.

The hospital subsequently contacted the Plateau State Liaison Office in Lagos to facilitate the safe return of the mother and child, according to Fabamwo.

Mrs. Philomena Yakubu, representing the Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs, commended the Lagos State Government, LASHMA, and LASUTH for saving the lives of the mother and child, expressing gratitude for the swift intervention.

Kindness, overcome with emotion, recounted her experience, initially thinking she was being wheeled into the mortuary when she arrived at the hospital, and thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu, LASHMA, LASUTH, and the hospital's Social Welfare Department for saving her life and that of her baby.

Since becoming fully operational in March 2026, LASHMA-AID has saved 34 lives, comprising eight ILERA EKO enrollees and 26 vulnerable residents, through rapid emergency stabilisation and access to life-saving medical care, according to LASHMA.
