Labourer plunges to fatal drop from 13-floor Akwa Ibom construction site

A tragic incident occurred in Akwa Ibom State on Friday, resulting in the death of a contract worker from Ratcom Construction Company, who fell from the top floor of a 13-storey building under construction.

The incident took place at the Ibom Tropicana Hotel construction site, plunging workers and local residents into a state of mourning.

According to reports, the deceased, a fire sprinkler fitter whose identity has not been confirmed, had measured his work on the ground floor before ascending to the top floor, where he suddenly fell to his death.

A source revealed to Vanguard that the worker died instantly, and his body was subsequently taken to a morgue in Uyo, although the exact location was not disclosed.

A worker at the site, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted that he was fetching water when he heard a loud thud on the ground, and upon turning around, he saw a person lying on the floor with a severely injured head.

Another worker, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that he was unaware of what had prompted the deceased to go to the top floor, and that he had been working outside the building when he noticed a commotion at the site.

Upon arriving at the scene, the second worker found the deceased with severe injuries, including broken arms, legs, and waist, as well as a head that was "smashed beyond recognition".

The worker explained that the deceased was a fire sprinkler fitter who had measured work for his team that morning before going upstairs, and was found dead on the ground with multiple fractures.

When contacted on Saturday, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, stated that he had not yet been briefed on the incident, but promised to conduct an investigation to determine what had occurred.
