Labour Party's Focus Shifts to Umuahia Gathering as Congressional Sessions Draw to a Close

Spearheading the Labour Party's efforts, Senator Nenadi Usman, the Interim National Chairman, has confirmed the successful completion of the party's congresses nationwide, a process that began on Thursday with ward-level elections and is set to culminate in a national convention on April 28 in Umuahia, Abia State's capital.

Through a post on her X handle on Saturday, Usman expressed her warm congratulations to all newly elected leaders and commended party members across the country for their dedication to ensuring the congresses were peaceful and free from conflict.

With the congresses now concluded, the focus shifts to Umuahia, where the party's national convention is scheduled to take place, and Usman has urged party members and stakeholders to maintain their unity, discipline, and teamwork as they gather on April 28.

Usman's appeal to party members and stakeholders is for them to carry forward the spirit of unity, discipline, and teamwork that defined the congresses, as the party prepares to elect a new national leadership in Umuahia.

The Labour Party has been grappling with internal leadership disputes since the 2023 general elections, which prompted stakeholders to convene an expanded National Executive Council meeting in Umuahia.

During this meeting, the Abure-led National Working Committee was dissolved, and a 29-member caretaker committee, headed by Senator Nenadi Usman, was established to oversee the conduct of congresses and a national convention aimed at electing new leaders.

The situation escalated into further litigation, ultimately leading to a Supreme Court judgment on April 4, 2025, which ruled that the tenure of former National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, had expired long before he purportedly presided over a national convention in Nnewi on March 27, 2024.

Undeterred by the Supreme Court's decision, Abure approached a Federal High Court to reassert his claim as National Chairman, but his claim was dismissed by a panel of three judges, with Justice Peter Lifu delivering the unanimous decision.

The judges based their decision on the Supreme Court verdict of April 4, 2025, reaffirming the legitimacy of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led Interim leadership and ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to engage with her in official business.

Abure has vowed to challenge this decision at the Supreme Court, indicating that the leadership dispute within the Labour Party is far from resolved.
