KWASU verifies allocation of N2.14 billion NELFund credit to 11,434 beneficiaries

The Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Prof. Jimoh Shaykh-Luqman, has confirmed receipt of N2,135,857,150 from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) on behalf of 11,434 students of the institution.

Shaykh Luqman disclosed this on Tuesday, responding to questions from journalists during an interactive session held in his office.

The vice-chancellor said the fund was received under the Federal Government-backed student loan scheme designed to improve access to tertiary education across the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the university had earlier acknowledged receipt of the funds in a letter dated April 21, addressed to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFund.

According to the letter, which was made available to journalists, the institution confirmed receiving the funds on April 17 as payment for student loans approved for eligible beneficiaries.

The disbursement covers tuition support for 11,434 KWASU students who successfully accessed the NELFund education loan programme.

Shaykh Luqman described the intervention as a major milestone in higher education financing and as significant relief for thousands of students and their families.

He noted that many students faced financial challenges that often threatened their academic progress, adding that the scheme would help reduce such pressures.

The vice-chancellor said the initiative would strengthen access to tertiary education and ensure that deserving students are not denied opportunities because of financial constraints.

He commended the Federal Government and NELFund for the smooth processing and timely release of the funds.

According to him, the intervention demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting students and promoting inclusive access to higher education.

He expressed optimism that the programme would enhance academic stability among beneficiaries and enable them to focus more on their studies.

“On behalf of the university, I sincerely thank the Federal Government and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund for the timely processing and disbursement of the funds in support of education,” he stated.

The vice-chancellor added that the university would continue to support initiatives to expand educational opportunities and improve student welfare.

The NELFund scheme was introduced by the Federal Government to provide financial assistance to eligible students in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

Education stakeholders have described the programme as a strategic intervention expected to increase enrolment, reduce drop-out rates and improve access to quality higher education.

The latest disbursement to KWASU represents one of the largest tuition support interventions received by the institution under the student loan programme.
