Kwara Christians push for one of their own to occupy governor's seat in 2027 polls

In a bid to promote balance and fairness, the Coalition of Concerned Christian Stakeholders in Kwara State has urged political parties to select a Christian candidate for the state's governorship in the 2027 elections, with a particular focus on Kwara South.

At a press conference in Ilorin, Rev. Dr. Jonathan Adeboye, a prominent elder stakeholder, highlighted that since democracy was established in Kwara State, only one Christian, Chief Cornelius Adebayo, has held the office of governor.

Rev. Adeboye emphasized that the advocacy is not driven by religious motivations, but rather a desire for fairness, inclusivity, and equal representation, as he appealed to stakeholders and religious communities to consider the coalition's plea.

The call for a Christian governor in 2027 is rooted in the need to promote inclusivity and prevent exclusionary tendencies, according to Rev. Adeboye, who noted that Kwara's diverse population should be reflected in its political leadership.

Kwara State is comprised of various communities, including Yoruba, Nupe, Baruba, Fulani, Igbo, and Hausa, as well as Christian, Muslim, and Traditional faiths, which should be represented in the state's political leadership.

Rev. Adeboye cited the state's history of civilian governors, which includes Alh. Adamu Attah, Chief C.O. Adebayo, Sen. Shaaba Lafiagi, Alh. Mohammed Lawal, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed, and Mall. Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, to support the coalition's position.

A Christian last held the office of governor in 1983, over 40 years ago, according to Rev. Adeboye, who stressed the need for balanced representation in the state's leadership.

The coalition has called for equal representation, emphasizing that Christians should have a fair share of political offices, as well as political inclusiveness, which would reflect Kwara's plural identity.

Fairness and balance are also essential, and the election of a Christian governor can help achieve this, according to the coalition's demands.

While the preferred candidate may come from the North or Central Senatorial Districts, Rev. Adeboye stated that Kwara South is being given priority due to its significant Christian population.

Rev. Adeboye concluded by emphasizing that the Kwara State Government House belongs to all Kwarans, regardless of tribe, religion, or minority status, and it is the collective responsibility of the people to ensure fairness and inclusivity.
