Kwankwaso Reveals Signed Pact to Serve Only One Term if Elected with Obi in 2027

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former governor of Kano State and vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, expressed his confidence that the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would fulfill his commitment to serving only one four-year term if elected in 2027, citing a written agreement signed by both men to this effect.

This agreement, as disclosed by Kwankwaso in an interview on Channels Television, stipulates that power will revert to the North after Obi's single four-year tenure.

Kwankwaso stated that he has no reason to doubt Obi's intentions, given their personal and professional relationship, and the fact that they have formalized their understanding in a written agreement.

According to Kwankwaso, the agreement signed by both of them is binding, and they have also signed a separate agreement with the party on this matter, underscoring the seriousness of their commitment.

Kwankwaso explained that the agreement entails working together as a team for four years, from 2027 to 2031, after which power will return to the North, as stipulated in the agreement.

He accepted the vice-presidential slot, despite previously pursuing the presidency, due to the current political circumstances, which he believes support a four-year southern presidency before power returns to the North.

Kwankwaso emphasized that he and Obi share the belief that the presidency should rotate between the North and South, with the South having the presidency for four years, followed by a return to the North.

When asked about his plans for the 2031 presidential election, Kwankwaso stated that the party is focused on its immediate objectives, while also considering its medium- and long-term plans for the country.

Peter Obi had previously declared his intention to serve only one term of four years if elected president in 2027, citing the need for stability and his unwillingness to stay in office beyond four years.
