Klopp reportedly agrees to terms for Germany's top coaching role

The German Football Federation, or DFB, revealed on Saturday that it was nearing a deal with Jurgen Klopp to appoint him as the new coach of Germany, pending approval from his current employer, the Red Bull Group, before the 59-year-old can make his return to coaching.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke engaged in an initial in-depth discussion with Klopp in New York on Friday, reaching an understanding on key contract points, according to a DFB press release.

The discussion was deemed constructive, with both parties expressing confidence that negotiations could be successfully concluded, subject to an agreement with Red Bull, and further talks are set to take place the following week.

Klopp has been the DFB's preferred candidate to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after Germany's round-of-32 World Cup exit, lost on penalties to Paraguay.

Regarded as one of the finest coaches, Klopp has had successful stints at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, and has been working as the head of global football for Red Bull since leaving Liverpool in 2024.

Klopp oversees a multi-club network for Red Bull, which includes clubs in Austria, Germany, Brazil, the United States, and Japan, and recently stated that he was "more than recharged" after his break from football management.

Germany has struggled in recent World Cups, suffering two consecutive group-stage exits before their latest disappointment in North America this summer, with their last World Cup win being 12 years ago in Brazil.
