Kebbi directs officials with political ambitions for 2027 to step down by the end of March

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has initiated a measure whereby all political office holders aiming to participate in the 2027 general elections must relinquish their current positions by March 31, 2026, at the latest.

This directive was formalized in a circular issued on March 2, 2026, by the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, bearing the signature of Kabiru Hassan Wasagu, Director of the State Executive Council, who acted on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government.

The primary rationale behind this move is to bring the state's political process into alignment with established laws and regulations, thereby ensuring that public office holders seeking elective positions do so in a manner that is compliant with due process.

The individuals impacted by this directive encompass a wide range of positions, including the Chief of Staff, Commissioners, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, as well as chairmen and members of statutory commissions, heads of extra-ministerial departments and agencies, permanent secretaries, local government chairpersons, and other political appointees.

In order to formalize their departure, all affected officials are required to submit their resignation letters to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, where they will be subjected to the appropriate administrative actions.
