Kanu's Attorney Voices Worries About Court Process and Deadline for Presenting His Case

Detained Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu's lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, has voiced concerns about the time allocated to the defence in the ongoing trial, specifically the limited period allowed for presenting its case after the prosecution's closure in June 2025.

Ejimakor pointed out that since the trial began in March, the prosecution had presented five witnesses, and after a no-case submission was dismissed, the court gave the defence only six days to start its case.

Kanu had expressed interest in self-representation after consulting with his legal team and requested more time to prepare and call witnesses, but this request was denied, according to Ejimakor.

The lawyer argued that there is a significant disparity in the time allocated to the prosecution and the defence, emphasizing that sufficient time is necessary for effective case preparation.

Ejimakor cited Section 36(6)(b) and (c) of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantee adequate time and facilities for defence preparation and the right of an accused person to defend themselves or through legal representation.

He also noted that jurisdictional issues raised during the proceedings have yet to be resolved, which he considered a fundamental matter that should be addressed before the trial continues.

Ejimakor stated that the defence cannot proceed under the current schedule and called for the consideration of fair trial standards as guaranteed under the law.

He emphasized that adherence to due process is essential to ensuring justice in the matter, highlighting the importance of upholding legal standards in the trial.
