The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has reiterated his support for the creation of an additional state in Nigeria’s South-East, urging stakeholders to consider a unified approach through the proposed “Animoma” model.

Kalu made the call on Wednesday while receiving a delegation of the Anioma State Movement, led by Ned Nwoko, during a courtesy visit to his office in Abuja.

He explained that “Animoma” represents a fusion of Anambra, Imo, and the proposed Anioma State in Delta, stressing that collaboration across regions would strengthen the case for state creation.

“You can’t do this without the governors of the South-East and South-South. While it is our duty to pass bills, critical stakeholders must be involved. Between Anioma State and Anim State, I would prefer a fusion—Animoma—so that the two brothers can come together as one,” he said.

Kalu urged proponents of separate state proposals to embrace compromise, noting that unity among stakeholders is essential for progress.

“Those pursuing this in isolation must be ready to give and take. There must be agreement between the South-East and South-South for this to move forward,” he added.

On the issue of a proposed state capital, the Deputy Speaker said it would be determined through negotiation and democratic consensus.

He also noted that while the proposal is achievable, its success depends on stakeholders’ willingness to engage constructively, emphasising the need for patience, understanding, and inclusiveness in the process.

Kalu, who chairs the Constitution Review Committee, assured that efforts to create an additional South-East state would remain a priority, while commending Nwoko for his advocacy for the Anioma cause.

He outlined key considerations for state creation, including geographical factors, cultural identity, economic viability, political dynamics, and regional alignment.

“We must ask: who are our neighbours? Who is joining us? Why should they join us? These are the core issues to evaluate as we move forward,” he said.

Earlier, Nwoko said the delegation’s visit was to commend Kalu for his efforts in advancing the political interests of the South-East.

Also speaking, the King of Ubulu-Uno in Delta State, His Royal Highness Henry Kikachukwu, described the agitation for Anioma State as a long-standing demand rooted in identity and inclusion.

“We are Igbos and want to fully identify as Ndi Igbo. The creation of Anioma State is long overdue,” he said.

The engagement underscores ongoing efforts by stakeholders to push for an additional state in the South-East, with calls for broader consensus across affected regions.
