Just In: Inspector-General of Police Taps Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon Placid to Serve as New National Police Spokesperson

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has given his approval for the appointment of DCP Anthony Okon Placid as the new Force Public Relations Officer, according to a statement released by the outgoing Force PRO, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin.

DCP Placid is described by ACP Hundeyin as a seasoned officer with a wealth of experience spanning administration, operations, intelligence, training, and international peacekeeping.

DCP Placid was born on 2 December 1970 in Uyo, and he hails from Mbiokporo Nsit, Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

He has a strong educational background, holding a Bachelor of Science in Geography and Regional Planning from the University of Uyo, a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the University of Jos, and an LL.B from the National Open University of Nigeria.

DCP Placid began his career with the Nigeria Police Force in 1996 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police at the Police Academy in Kano, and he was commissioned in August 1998.

Throughout his career, DCP Placid has attended numerous professional and international courses, including the United Nations Peace Operations Specialised Training and the UNITAR Senior Leadership and Peacebuilding course in Kenya.

He holds various certifications, including Police Studies, Military Studies, Gender Awareness, International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights, and Civilian Protection, showcasing his diverse expertise.

DCP Placid has served in a range of key positions, both within Nigeria and internationally, including roles such as Police Public Relations Officer in Adamawa State and PPRO at the Police Staff College in Jos.

His international experience includes serving as Chief of Training for the African Union Mission in Sudan and Head of Training and Development for the United Nations Mission in Darfur.

Within Nigeria, DCP Placid has held positions such as Divisional Police Officer in Federal Housing Calabar, Bakassi, Uruan, and Gembu, and Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Robbery Unit in Kaduna State.

He has also worked as an African Union Election Security Adviser and Assistant Commissioner of Police in operations and intelligence across Akwa Ibom, Kogi, and Abia States.

DCP Placid is a member of several prestigious organizations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Commonwealth Human Rights Trainer, and the International Committee of the Red Cross Trainer on International Humanitarian Law.

He is a graduate of the Senior Executive Course of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, and he was inducted as a Member of the National Institute on 13 December 2025.

On a personal note, DCP Placid is married with children and enjoys a range of hobbies, including listening to music, playing football, basketball, table tennis, badminton, and engaging with people.
