Judiciary hands down capital punishment to Boko Haram extremist, ruling execution by suspension from the neck.

Auwalu Samaila, a Boko Haram terrorist, was sentenced to death by hanging by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, following his guilty plea to six counts of terrorism-related offences brought against him by the Federal Government.

Justice James Omotosho, who delivered the judgment, expressed that the convict showed no remorse despite the numerous atrocities and loss of lives attributed to him, stating "May God have mercy on his soul" as he handed down the sentence.

The Federal Government had charged Samaila, from Gulak Village, Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa, in the case marked FHC/KNJ/CR/122/2026, with terrorism-related offences as the sole defendant.

Samaila was alleged to have been a member of Boko Haram, a proscribed terrorist organisation, between 2012 and 2017 in Sabongari Kyambula Village, Gulak LGA of Adamawa, as stated in count one of the charges.

In counts two and three, he was accused of receiving training on terrorist activities from Sadiqu Adamu, a Boko Haram member, and training in weapon handling with AK47 in preparation to commit an act of terrorism under Yabana's leadership in Izza Boko Haram Camp.

Samaila was also accused of participating in attacks at Damboa, Borno, and Gombi in Adamawa, where civilians and military personnel were killed, as well as an attack at Hong in Adamawa, where civilian lives were lost.

The prosecution, led by Jemila Ade, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions in the Ministry of Justice, tendered Samaila's confessional statement, which was admitted in evidence and marked as an exhibit.

In his confessional statement, Samaila revealed that he was used to convey female suicide bombers to target locations, including one named Halima, whom he took to Muna Garage in Maiduguri.

He also admitted to participating in attacks in various locations, including Mubi, Chibok, Damaturu, Michika, and Gulak, and stated that an operation in Konduga led to the amputation of his left leg.

Justice Omotosho sentenced Samaila to death by hanging in counts four, five, and six, and also committed him to 25 years' imprisonment in each of counts one and two, and 30 years in count three.

In separate judgments on Thursday, Justice Omotosho also convicted and sentenced two Boko Haram terrorists, Shura Abdullahi and Abdulrahman Ari, to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to terrorism offences.

Aisami Kadi, Umaru Usman, and Abdulrahman Hassan, who also pleaded guilty to the charges, were committed to different jail terms ranging between 20 and 21 years by the judge.
