Judge orders nurse to be held in custody in connection with fatal incident involving youth corps participant in Ogun state

A 37-year-old nurse, Kehinde Adesanya, has been remanded for 60 days at the Ibara correctional centre in Abeokuta, pending the receipt of legal advice from the State Directorate of Public Prosecution, due to her alleged involvement in the unlawful abortion that led to the death of 23-year-old corps member Victoria Ariyo.

Adesanya was arraigned on Thursday before the Magistrate Court at Isabo, Abeokuta, on a four-count charge, including conspiracy, supply of drugs for unlawful abortion, and murder, in connection with Ariyo's death, which allegedly resulted from complications arising from an illegal abortion.

The deceased corps member, Victoria Ariyo, was reportedly in a romantic relationship with Abass Olalekan, the Abeokuta South Local Government Inspector of the NYSC, which led to her pregnancy and subsequent unlawful abortion, resulting in her death.

Abass Olalekan was previously arrested and arraigned on Monday before Magistrate A. K Araba on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion, and he pleaded not guilty, securing a bail of N500,000.

The charge sheet against Kehinde Adesanya includes Count I, which alleges that she conspired with others to commit a felony, specifically abortion, between January and March 2026, an offence punishable under section 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.

Count II of the charge sheet accuses Adesanya of unlawfully attempting to procure an abortion by supplying drugs to Ariyo, an offence contrary to section 230 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.

Count III alleges that Adesanya conspired with others to commit a felony, specifically murder, between January and March 2026, an offence punishable under section 324 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.

Count IV of the charge sheet states that Adesanya unlawfully killed Ariyo by giving her drugs for an abortion, an offence contrary to section 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.

Police counsel Solomon Babalola urged the court to remand Adesanya for 60 days at the Ibara Correctional Centre, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecution, citing that the defendant committed the offences between January and March 2026, at Ikereku area, Laderin of Abeokuta.

Babalola informed the court that the alleged offences contravene sections 516, 230, 324, and 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006, and that the drugs allegedly led to Ariyo's death.

Mrs O.O. Sam-Obaleye, the Magistrate, granted the application and ordered Adesanya's remand at the Ibara Correctional Centre, pending legal advice from the State DPP.
