Iwobi expresses no remorse over Nigeria decision as he prepares for milestone 100th appearance

Alexander Iwobi, the skilled midfielder, has expressed his heartfelt appreciation to Nigeria and its people, both at home and abroad, for their unwavering support throughout his international career with the Super Eagles, as he prepares to achieve his 100th cap for Nigeria in their upcoming match against Portugal in Leiria on Wednesday.

With a sense of pride and gratitude, Iwobi reflected on his journey, stating, "I am proud to be where I am today, proud to wear the green and white, and I am grateful to everyone, including the coach who gave me my first team call-up, and I have no regrets choosing Nigeria."

Iwobi's debut for Nigeria took place in a friendly match against DR Congo in Visé, Belgium, on 8th October 2015, and now, 128 months later, he is set to make his 100th appearance in another friendly match in Europe.

Recalling his early days, Iwobi shared that he initially joined the Nigeria U23 team camp, where he felt a strong sense of belonging, having previously represented England at the youth level, but always considering Nigeria as his home, thanks in part to his father's guidance.

His father's advice was to enjoy his football and make his own decisions, and Iwobi noted that after 10 years and eight months with the Super Eagles, he doesn't consider himself a legend, but rather a dedicated player, who feels great about achieving his 100th cap and wishes he could add another 100 caps to his tally.

Iwobi's most memorable moment with the Super Eagles was scoring the goal against Zambia's Chipolopolo at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in October 2017, which secured Nigeria's qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals, a moment made even more special as his parents were in attendance.

Although Iwobi would have loved to win the AFCON and participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, he reiterated that he has no regrets about his time with the Super Eagles.

Chuka Iwobi, a former footballer himself, expressed the family's immense pride in Alex's achievements, stating that they are grateful to the nation for the opportunities given to him, and they pray for his continued success and the Super Eagles' ability to repay the fans' love and support.
