Islamic cleric Gumi asserts he is unstoppable in his travels across Nigeria.

Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric, has addressed the backlash surrounding his trip to Ibadan last year, rejecting claims that he was promoting the Islamisation of Oyo State or spreading northern religious ideologies in the South-West.

Gumi stressed that no individual or group could restrict his travel to any part of the country, emphasizing that his Ibadan visit was not made at the behest of any Muslim organisation or individual in the South-West.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Gumi clarified that he attended the event as a representative of a coalition of northern Islamic scholars, shedding light on his role in the visit.

He expressed his newfound understanding of how Islamophobia is influencing politics in the South-West and why he was drawn into local controversies, stating "I was in Ibadan not at the invitation of any South-West Muslim individual or group, but as a representative of the Coalition of Northern Muslim Ulama."

Gumi posed a rhetorical question, "Can anybody stop me from going anywhere in Nigeria?", as he asserted his right to travel freely within the country.

His comments came a day after Mrs. Rachael Alamu, principal of Community High School, Esiele, and one of the victims abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, refuted reports that the kidnappers had demanded the introduction of Sharia law in the state as a condition for their release.

According to Mrs. Alamu, who spoke from captivity in a viral video, the kidnappers did not demand Sharia law or a N1 billion ransom, but instead sought the release of their associates currently in government custody.

Gumi's visit to Ibadan took place on November 19, 2025, where he served as a guest speaker at the Southern Nigerian Ulama Summit held at the University of Ibadan.

During his visit, he also participated in a courtesy meeting attended by prominent Muslim scholars from both the northern and southern parts of the country, engaging with peers from across the region.
