Iran puts to death individual accused of collaborating with Israeli intelligence agency Mossad

Iranian authorities carried out the execution of a man on Tuesday, after he was found guilty of collaborating with and spying for Israel's Mossad spy agency, according to the judiciary.

The judiciary's Mizan Online website reported that Gholamreza Khani Shakarab was put to death on charges of intelligence cooperation and espionage in favour of the Zionist regime, with his sentence having been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The execution, which took place by hanging, is the latest in a series of security-related executions in the Islamic republic, following the outbreak of war with Israel and the United States on February 28.

Mizan described Shakarab as a key figure in Mossad's operations abroad, who had been attempting to recruit individuals within the country to carry out actions against national security.

According to the report, Shakarab was apprehended by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps intelligence forces, who used complex tactics and deception to guide him into the country and arrest him.

The report also revealed that Shakarab had been tasked by Mossad to travel to a regional country, with the aim of identifying and preparing for the assassination of a Jewish rabbi, in order to falsely accuse Iran of anti-Jewish actions.

The exact date of Shakarab's arrest and sentencing was not immediately clear, but it was reported that his execution by hanging took place on Tuesday morning, after his sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court.

On Monday, Iran had executed another man, who was found guilty of carrying out armed attacks during the nationwide anti-government protests that peaked in January.

A day earlier, Mojtaba Kian was hanged for espionage, in the first reported execution linked to spying offences since the start of Iran's war with the United States and Israel.

Iran is known to carry out the second-highest number of executions worldwide, after China, according to rights groups, including Amnesty International.
