IPOB slams Soludo for stance on Kanu's freedom

The Indigenous People of Biafra has voiced its disapproval of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo's stance on the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, which the group claims contradicts his previous public statements, particularly in the context of his opposition to former presidential candidate Peter Obi's similar calls.

In a statement released on Monday, IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful highlighted the inconsistency in Soludo's position, noting that the governor had previously expressed support for Kanu's release, including a reported visit to the detained IPOB leader at a Department of State Services facility in Abuja in January 2023.

During this visit, Soludo allegedly offered to stand as surety for Kanu, which IPOB cited as evidence of the governor's earlier advocacy for the IPOB leader's release, as part of broader efforts to promote peace in the South-East.

IPOB also referenced comments made by Anambra State Commissioner for Information Law Mefor in March 2025, which suggested that the governor's administration had continued to work towards securing Kanu's release as part of its peace initiatives in the region.

The group expressed disappointment that the same administration was now criticising Peter Obi for making a similar appeal, describing this development as inconsistent and potentially influenced by political considerations.

IPOB questioned the apparent change in Soludo's stance on Kanu's release, noting that calls for the IPOB leader's freedom have been made by numerous prominent Nigerians across political and regional divides.

Among those who have previously advocated for Kanu's release and a political resolution to the issue are the late Mbazulike Amaechi and former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo George Obiozor.

The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu remains a pressing concern for IPOB supporters, and the group has urged the Federal Government to consider releasing him.

IPOB has reaffirmed its support for individuals and organisations advocating for Kanu's freedom, stating that it will continue to pursue this cause through peaceful advocacy and dialogue.
