International Football: Ime Okon Explains Decision to Represent South Africa Instead of Nigeria at the World Cup

South Africa defender Ime Okon has explained why he chose to represent Bafana Bafana ahead of Nigeria.

Okon, who is eligible to play for both countries, said his decision was guided by his strong ties to South Africa, insisting that the country has always been home to him.

The Hannover defender is currently part of South Africa’s squad at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The centre-back featured for the entire duration of South Africa’s 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic on Thursday, helping his side secure a valuable point in the group stage.

Speaking in a video shared by Nigerian journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Okon revealed that his heart had always been with South Africa, where he had previously represented the national team at youth level.

“I don’t know what to say but at the end of the day, I know where my heart lies. I have played for South Africa in the COSAFA games and I scored,” Okon said.

The 21-year-old was also asked whether officials from Nigeria had attempted to persuade him to change

his international allegiance.

However, Okon dismissed reports of any significant approach from the three-time African champions and reiterated his attachment to South Africa.

“Not really, South Africa is my home. That’s what I have to say,” he disclosed.

Okon’s comments come at a time when Nigeria are absent from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after failing to qualify for the tournament.

The Super Eagles missed out on a place at the global showpiece for the second successive edition, having also failed to qualify for the previous World Cup, extending an unwanted run for a country that made its debut at the tournament in 1994.

Meanwhile, South Africa remain in contention at the World Cup, with Okon continuing to play a key role in the Bafana Bafana defence.
