Inspector General instructs police to interact with public in a respectful and courteous manner

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has urged officers of the Nigeria Police Force to exhibit civility and professionalism when interacting with the public, emphasizing that citizens are essentially the "bosses" of the police.

Disu issued this directive on Saturday during a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Governor's Office Correspondents, located at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, where he had earlier addressed officers of the Rapid Response Squad.

The police boss's visit to the Lagos State Governor's Office Correspondents was significant, given the proximity of the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, which houses the journalists, to the RRS Police Station.

According to Disu, the success of policing is heavily reliant on the cooperation and trust of the public, stressing the importance of building strong relationships with the community.

Disu instructed the officers to maintain a high level of professionalism, reminding them that they are paid with taxpayers' money and should therefore treat the public with respect and dignity.

The IGP, who previously served as the commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, highlighted the significance of partnering with the community to achieve successful policing outcomes.

Disu expressed his delight at reconnecting with journalists covering the Lagos State Government, with whom he had a close working relationship during his tenure as RRS commander.

He emphasized the importance of his visit to Lagos, which was part of his broader engagement with key stakeholders, including the Commissioner of Police, the Assistant Inspector-General, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as well as officers of the RRS.

Disu's visit aimed to reinforce the values of discipline, professionalism, and respect for human rights within the Force, while also reconnecting with officers and long-standing partners, including the press.

Responding to the IGP's remarks, Chairman of Lagos State Governor's Office Correspondence, George Okojie, praised Disu for his longstanding relationship with journalists and his people-oriented approach to policing.

Okojie described Disu as a leader who consistently demonstrates humility and accessibility, recalling his time as RRS commander when he maintained close ties with journalists and supported them both professionally and personally.

Okojie expressed confidence in Disu's leadership, stating that his style gives hope for continued improvement in policing in Nigeria.
