Insecurity: ‘Go back home, summon leadership meeting’ – Tinubu tells Plateau leaders

President Bola Tinubu has urged leaders from Plateau State to return home, convene a stakeholder meeting, and implement existing recommendations aimed at curbing the persistent violent attacks in the north-central state.

Tinubu gave the charge on Tuesday when he received a Plateau delegation at the State House in Abuja, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang. Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Simon Lalong, senator representing Plateau south, Nentawe Yilwatda, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, and former governors of the state were also present.

The meeting followed Tinubu’s April 2 visit to Plateau, during which he commiserated with victims of the March 29 attack on the Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North local government area.

Addressing the delegation, Tinubu directed the leaders to review and implement the white paper on attacks in the state, and called on them to identify individuals inciting violence for prosecution.

“Thank God all the former governors are alive and here. Call one another. Ignore the governors’ committee or incorporate them. Take that white paper or gazette that, go through it and agree to implement the white paper,” he said.

The president also pledged to work with the National Assembly on the establishment of state police, which he said would strengthen law enforcement and help address the state’s security challenges.

“For us to stop creating widows, widowers, orphans, there must be peace. It is very tough to develop when you don’t have peace,” Tinubu said.

Governor Mutfwang, speaking at the meeting, described the gathering of former Plateau governors as an unprecedented show of unity.

“The coming together of former governors has never happened before. This is the first time it is happening,” he said, expressing optimism that the development would help depoliticise the crisis and foster a collective path to peace.
