Industry leaders pivot to manufacturing cars as travel demand drops significantly

Nigerian transport magnates, including prominent figures such as Mr. Frank Nneji, Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, Mr. Chidi Ajaere, and Chief Godwin Ubaka Okeke, are venturing into vehicle assembly in a bid to sustain their businesses amid a decline in road passenger traffic, with at least four major transport executives having made this move over the past few years.

These seasoned business leaders, who have amassed decades of experience in the transport sector, are focusing on assembling commercial vehicles tailored to their operations, with the aim of meeting the evolving needs of the transportation industry and creating employment opportunities for Nigerian youth.

Notable transport moguls investing heavily in vehicle assembly include Mr. Frank Nneji, founder of ABC Transport Plc, Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, founder of Chisco Transport, Mr. Chidi Ajaere, CEO of God is Good Motors, and Chief Godwin Ubaka Okeke, founder of GUO Transport, who acquired ANAMMCO.

These executives are leveraging their extensive knowledge to build high-quality vehicles that can withstand the test of time and enhance the efficiency of their transportation services, with ABC Transport’s Chairman, Nneji, overseeing Transit Support Services Ltd, which assembles Shacman trucks.

Chisco Motors founder, Chief Anyaegbu, has established an assembly line for Yutong buses in Nigeria, while Jet Systems, led by Ajaere, is producing eco-friendly pickups and minibuses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Okeke’s GUO Transport is focusing on assembling durable pickup trucks.

Their efforts have yielded positive results, with their brands emerging as leaders in various sectors, and their vehicles becoming essential to Nigeria’s haulage, construction, logistics, and mass transit industries, ranging from heavy-duty trucks to minibuses.

Their trucks, in particular, have gained popularity among transporters, construction companies, and large organizations like the Dangote Group, with Yutong buses becoming the dominant coach brand in Nigeria, surpassing well-established European brands like Mercedes-Benz and Volvo in popularity.

This success can be attributed to the local assembly of these vehicles, which has significantly reduced costs and improved availability for local businesses, according to Chisco Motors, which confirmed the commencement of their vehicle assembly venture this year.

Chisco Motors is now assembling Yutong luxury buses and Sinotruk trucks, in addition to offering a range of other top Chinese commercial vehicles, with the aim of ensuring the continued sustainability of their fleet and introducing new transport services.

One innovative initiative by Chisco Motors is the Drive-To-Own franchise, which allows carefully selected captains to operate these newly assembled vehicles, with plans to deploy 80 buses and 40 trucks that will connect the southeastern region with the northern part of Nigeria.

The Drive-To-Own initiative will also provide premium services on the Lagos-Accra West Coast route, with Chisco Group Chairman, Anyaegbu, highlighting his long-term vision for the industry at a recent event in Lagos.

Anyaegbu reflected on his early days as a transporter in 1981, when he viewed the business as an opportunity to create jobs and positively impact the economy, emphasizing the importance of making investments that benefit both the transport sector and the lives of Nigerians.

Anyaegbu’s son, Mr. Obinna Anyaegbu, Managing Director of Chisco Transport, reiterated their commitment to meeting the diverse transportation needs of Nigeria, with the Drive-To-Own initiative receiving praise from those who have been trained under the programme.

The new drivers, known as “captains,” are now ready to operate with a focus on safety and customer service, with the luxury buses equipped with top-tier amenities, including comfortable seating, phone charging points, and on-screen entertainment, while the trucks are designed with bed space for drivers to rest.

The newly established Chisco Auto Assembly Plant, located in Surulere, Lagos, is expected to attract significant attention from other transporters and logistics companies seeking to upgrade their fleets with durable, cost-effective vehicles.

The shift towards local vehicle assembly in Nigeria, driven by these transport moguls, may be the catalyst needed to further modernize and elevate the country’s transportation industry.
