Imo steps up efforts to introduce robot-assisted operations to revolutionize medical care

In a significant move to overhaul the state's healthcare system, the Imo State government is working diligently to establish its first-ever robotic surgical centre as part of a large-scale initiative to bring medical care into the modern era. This endeavour is being driven by Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma, who in January 2026, announced a groundbreaking multi-partner agreement to create a world-class medical facility that harnesses artificial intelligence and robotic surgical technology.

The Heartland Hospital Management Corporation, tasked with overseeing healthcare administration in the state, has been instrumental in pushing this vision forward, recently hosting a high-level meeting with key stakeholders from various health agencies. This strategic session, convened at the HHMC headquarters in Owerri, drew together leaders from the Imo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, the Imo State Specialist Hospital, and the Imo State University Teaching Hospital, alongside senior executives from the HHMC.

Discussions during the meeting centred on the establishment of the robotic surgical centre, upgrades to existing facilities, the modernization of equipment, and ways to enhance service delivery across the state. The HHMC Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Emmanuel Ogueri, underscored the corporation's role as a flagship initiative of the governor, aimed at modernizing hospital administration, boosting efficiency, and coordinating clinical services statewide.

Dr. Ogueri emphasized the collective responsibility of the team, stating, "We are a team of professionals assembled to realize the lofty vision of the governor in healthcare. The transformation going on across sectors is also evident in healthcare, and we must sustain the momentum through collective effort."

Dr. Chima Oparaji, Chief Medical Director of the Imo State Specialist Hospital in Owerri, commended the ongoing reconstruction efforts and the forthcoming robotic surgical centre as tangible indicators of progress, acknowledging past neglect in the sector but expressing optimism about the lasting impact of Governor Uzodimma's reforms.

Dr. Kosisochukwu Ekenjoku, Executive Secretary of the Imo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, highlighted the importance of regular coordination between primary healthcare services and the HHMC to ensure integration and the realization of the administration's goals.

Representing the Imo State University Teaching Hospital in Orlu, Director of Administration Dr. Ben Bernard praised the governor's revitalization efforts and the management of the HHMC, urging the continuation of these policies beyond the current administration to prevent the setbacks that have historically plagued the sector.
