Afrobeats superstar Davido has reflected on his remarkable rise to fame and fortune, saying he has achieved a rare level of success despite being born into a wealthy family.

The Nigerian singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, made the remarks in a recent interview with Vibe Magazine while discussing his decision to pursue music and establish himself as one of Africa’s biggest music stars.

Davido acknowledged that his story does not fit the popular “grass-to-grace” narrative often celebrated by African audiences, but said he has nevertheless built a distinct identity and fortune of his own.

“Africa loves the grass-to-grace story. The young boy that was poor and became rich. But not to brag, which other billionaire child do you know in the world who has made a name for himself and also made a lot of money? You can’t name one aside from me,” Davido told Vibe Magazine.

The singer was born into the family of billionaire businessman Chief Adedeji Adeleke, whose business interests span sectors including energy, infrastructure and education.

Davido’s family has also maintained a strong presence in Nigerian politics, with his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, serving as Governor of Osun State.

Despite his privileged upbringing, Davido said his decision to pursue music was not initially welcomed by his father.

He eventually released his debut single in 2011 and went on to establish a successful career that has lasted more than 15 years.
