IGP Disu disburses N2.43bn to families of fallen police officers

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Wednesday presented cheques totaling over N2.43 billion to 1,075 next of kin and families of police officers who died in active service across the country.

The presentation, which took place at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, covered outstanding insurance benefits spanning more than seven years.

Speaking at the ceremony, the IGP said the welfare of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force remains a central pillar of his administration, stressing that the institution must show responsibility and compassion to personnel who make the ultimate sacrifice.

“This ceremony represents more than the presentation of financial benefits; it is a solemn acknowledgement of the courage, commitment, and sacrifices made by officers who served this nation with honour,” he said.

Disu disclosed that the total sum of N2,435,421,584.11 was disbursed under the Group Life Assurance and the IGP Family Welfare Schemes, covering policy years from 2018 to 2026, including previously outstanding insurance claims.

Addressing families of the deceased officers, he expressed condolences, noting that no amount of money can replace the loss of loved ones.

“These officers were not only members of the Nigeria Police Force; they were fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters who placed the safety of others above their own. Their sacrifices will never be forgotten,” he added.

The IGP also assured that efforts would be intensified to improve administrative efficiency, eliminate delays in processing claims, and ensure timely and transparent delivery of benefits. He added that modern technology would be deployed to enhance record management and accountability in welfare administration.

In her remarks, the Force Insurance Officer, ACP Ameh, said the initiative reflects the IGP’s firm commitment to prioritising the welfare of officers and their families.

She noted that the police leadership has directed insurance firms to ensure prompt settlement of claims, warning that any company found delaying payments would be blacklisted.

Ameh urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds, describing the gesture as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the welfare framework of the Force.
