Igbo chiefs caution against stifling dissent, arguing it undermines democratic principles

The Igbo Leaders of Thought, a prestigious group of intellectuals, traditional rulers, and stakeholders from Southeastern Nigeria, has strongly denounced the systematic suppression of opposition parties in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that a thriving democracy relies on a vibrant opposition.

This warning comes as the group cautions that failure to address the clampdown on opposition parties could severely undermine the integrity of the 2027 general elections.

The Igbo Leaders of Thought's stance follows recent concerns raised by Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, regarding his safety and the deliberate frustration of his businesses, as well as several judicial rulings aimed at destabilizing key opposition parties' preparations for the 2027 polls.

The group also recalled that Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State had previously warned Mr. Peter Obi that his security was not guaranteed in the state, and noted that during Mr. Obi's visit to Edo State earlier this year, gunshots were fired at him and his entourage.

According to the Igbo Leaders of Thought, the emasculation of opposition parties could have far-reaching consequences, potentially wrecking Nigeria's hard-won democracy and causing significant political instability in the country.

In a statement signed by Prof. Elochukwu Amucheazi, President, and Prof. Jerry Chukwuokolo, Secretary, the group expressed dismay at the use of state institutions, including the judiciary, security agencies, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, to incapacitate opposition parties and hinder their ability to compete with the ruling party in the 2027 general elections.

The group noted that the democracy enjoyed in Nigeria today is a result of a long and arduous struggle against military rule, and it is ironic that those currently in power, who pride themselves on being champions of democracy, are now working to stifle the opposition.

The Igbo Leaders of Thought strongly condemned the ongoing suppression of opposition in Nigeria, warning that if left unchecked, it could derail plans for the 2027 general election, cause severe political instability, and undermine the country's hard-won democracy.

Nigeria cannot afford another major political crisis arising from elections, the group warned, citing the country's history of suffering dearly due to past electoral mistakes.

The Igbo Leaders of Thought cautioned that those who fail to remember the past are doomed to repeat the same mistakes, and reminded Nigerians of the violent political protest, Operation Wetie, which took place in Western Nigeria in 1962 and triggered a chain of events, including bloodshed and property destruction, ultimately leading to the first military coup on January 15, 1966.

The group also recalled the devastating political upheaval in Ondo State during the Second Republic, which was sparked by a disputed governorship election and resulted in widespread property destruction and loss of life, ultimately paving the way for another military intervention in 1983.

The Igbo Leaders of Thought further reminded Nigerians of the political violence that followed the 2011 presidential election, which, according to Human Rights Watch, claimed over 800 lives in Northern Nigeria, including those of innocent youth corps members.

The group emphasized that it is not attempting to spread fear, but rather appealing to those in authority to take the right course of action and do what is right for the country.
