I fell into a two-day diabetic coma, reveals Keppy Ekpenyong

Veteran actor Keppy Ekpenyong Bassey has shared a harrowing health experience from 2022, revealing that he spent two days in a diabetic coma due to intense work pressure and neglect of his own well-being.

This disturbing episode was disclosed by Bassey during a tribute in his honor, which took place last Sunday at Ojez Lounge, National Stadium, Surulere, and was organized by the Ojez Entertainment Forum.

The event, themed “Celebrating the Living Rather Than the Dead,” drew a notable crowd of figures from the Nigerian film industry, including Segun Arinze, Femi Durojaiye, and broadcaster Effiong Idowu, among others.

Also in attendance were Don Pedro Adabi of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN Lagos Acting President Mrs. Mary Edward, NFVCB DG Dr. Shaibu Husseini, Emeka Osai, John Chukwuma, musician Righteousman, comedian Dauda, actor-producer Prince Tunde Shado, AGN Director of Socials Blessing Ani, and Chidi Nwakobia.

In a conversation with NollyNow, Ekpenyong elaborated on the factors that led to his health scare and temporary withdrawal from movie sets, explaining that his non-stop work schedule had taken a toll on his physical health.

Ekpenyong attributed his diabetic coma to his poor sleeping and eating habits, as well as the immense pressure he was under, which caused his blood pressure to spike, but fortunately, he recovered after two days.

Reflecting on the significance of the event, Ekpenyong expressed his enthusiasm, stating that he was proud of the initiative to celebrate individuals while they are still alive, as emphasized by Effiong Idowu.

Ekpenyong emphasized the importance of appreciating people while they can still be recognized, saying that once a person is deceased, they are no longer remembered or recognized.

Actor, producer, and screenwriter Femi Durojaiye also shared his thoughts, celebrating his long-standing bond with Ekpenyong, whom he referred to as his brother, friend, and elder brother.

Durojaiye revealed that he had known Ekpenyong since their secondary school days, making him the person who has known Ekpenyong the longest, in the absence of his parents.
