Henderson rejoins England’s World Cup squad after surgery on broken arm

England midfielder Jordan Henderson has rejoined the squad after undergoing surgery on the broken arm he suffered while celebrating England’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 victory over Mexico.

According to Reuters, the 36-year-old returned to England’s base in Kansas City after undergoing an operation following the freak injury sustained during Sunday’s 3-2 win at Estadio Azteca.

Henderson slipped while climbing over the advertising barrier during the post-match celebrations and was taken to hospital, where he was later diagnosed with a broken arm. He underwent surgery in Kansas City before rejoining the squad.

“Surgery done! Now let’s get ready for the big one Saturday!” Henderson wrote on Instagram on Wednesday.

The injury has ruled the former Liverpool F.C. captain out of the remainder of the World Cup, although he will stay with Thomas Tuchel’s squad in a leadership role.

Henderson had made only one appearance at the tournament, coming on as a late substitute in England’s group-stage victory over Panama, before suffering the injury during the celebrations after the win over Mexico.

England will face Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday in Miami, with Tuchel’s side already without suspended defender Jarell Quansah and monitoring the fitness of Reece James, who is expected to return from a hamstring injury.
