Head of South Africa's Military Drops By Prestigious Defence Academy

On Monday, Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha, the Chief of the South African Army, made a strategic visit to the National Defence College of Nigeria in Abuja, aiming to bolster defence collaboration and professional military education between Nigeria and South Africa, two pivotal partners in Africa's security framework.

This visit underscores the need for enhanced cooperation among defence institutions and military leaders in the face of Africa's evolving security landscape, as highlighted by Lieutenant General Mbatha, who emphasized that "the evolving security environment across Africa requires deeper collaboration among defence institutions and military leaders".

According to Col Appolonia Anele, the Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant General Mbatha praised the National Defence College for its crucial role in developing strategic leaders who can address complex security challenges across Africa during his visit.

Lieutenant General Mbatha noted that institutions like the National Defence College are essential for fostering cooperation, knowledge exchange, and collective approaches to peace and security among African militaries, serving as vital platforms for strengthening cooperation.

He also stressed that professional military education is crucial for preparing senior officers to effectively manage strategic decision-making, defence management, and leadership responsibilities in contemporary security operations.

Rear Admiral Muhammed Dahiru, representing the Commandant NDC, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, welcomed the delegation and described the visit as a testament to the strong and enduring defence relationship between Nigeria and South Africa.

According to Rear Admiral Dahiru, such high-level engagements will further strengthen strategic cooperation, deepen professional exchanges, and reinforce collaborative efforts toward enhancing peace and security across the continent.

The Commandant revealed that the National Defence College is Nigeria's premier institution for strategic military education, designed to prepare selected senior military officers and civilian officials for higher responsibilities in national security, defence management, and policy formulation.

The College hosts participants from several allied countries, promoting regional and international cooperation in tackling security challenges, as noted by the Commandant.

As part of his visit, Lieutenant General Lawrence Mbatha led a delegation on a guided tour of the Nigerian Army Museum, where he commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and commitment to preserving historical artefacts that honour the sacrifices of fallen heroes.

He observed that documenting materials from various theatres of operation reflects the strong dedication of the Nigerian Army to safeguarding its military heritage and institutional memory, as noted during the tour.
