Gunmen kill Mozambican Catholic bishop in fatal attack

A Catholic bishop, appointed by Pope Leo XIV to a central region of Mozambique, was found shot to death at his residence on Saturday, with the country's episcopal body describing the circumstances as "mysterious".

Bishop Osorio Citora Afonso, a 54-year-old clergyman, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, likely from a single bullet, according to Maximino Amilcar, a spokesman for the criminal investigations bureau.

Amilcar characterized the incident as "murder by gunshot" outside the bishop's residence in Quelimane, but noted that providing further details at this time would be challenging.

The Vatican responded to the news, stating that the pope was deeply sorrowful upon learning of the violent act that resulted in the death of Bishop Osorio Citora Afonso.

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo expressed his profound sadness over Afonso's passing, describing it as an "irreparable loss for Mozambican society" in a statement.

Roughly a quarter of Mozambique's population, a former Portuguese colony, identifies as Catholic, based on census data from nearly a decade ago.

Bishop Afonso, a native of Mozambique, had a diverse career, serving in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Italy, and as auxiliary bishop in Maputo in 2023, before being appointed bishop the following year.

In 2025, Pope Leo XIV transferred Afonso to the diocese of Quelimane in July, a move that preceded his tragic death.

The Episcopal Conference of Mozambique reported that Afonso was "found lifeless and in mysterious circumstances that need to be made clear", highlighting the need for further investigation into his death.
