A devastating attack on the communities in Yaav and Mbadura Council Wards of Kwande Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue State has left close to 20 persons dead, with the death toll potentially rising as search efforts continue.

The assault, carried out by suspected armed herdsmen, began early Thursday morning and persisted into the night, forcing residents to flee their homes in fear as they searched for survivors and missing persons.

A source from the area revealed that the attackers targeted innocent women and children, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake, with the source estimating the current death toll to be around 20.

The source expressed deep sadness and frustration, stating that the community feels abandoned and unprotected, with the attack highlighting the vulnerability of defenseless people in the area.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, through his Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Solomon Iorpev, issued a statement condemning the attack and expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives, extending condolences to the families of the victims and the affected communities.

The governor emphasized that every life matters and that the loss of even one life is too many, assuring the people of Kwande and Benue State that his administration will work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.

Governor Alia directed security agencies to intensify their efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further attacks, acknowledging the recent deployment of over 400 security personnel to Jato-Aka and other parts of Kwande.

The governor urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies working to restore peace to the troubled communities, sharing the desire of the people for peace and security.

Governor Alia reiterated his commitment to achieving absolute peace in Kwande and across Benue State, stating that his administration will not rest until this goal is achieved.
