Gunmen abduct seminarian from Otukpo Catholic Bishop’s residence

The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo has confirmed the abduction of one of its seminarians, Mr. Kelvin Ochai, following an attack at the Bishop’s Residence in Asa III, Otukpo, Benue State.

The Diocese disclosed that the incident occurred late on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the residence of the Catholic Bishop of Otukpo Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Apochi.

In a statement issued by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, the Diocese announced the abduction and appealed to the faithful to pray for the victim’s safe return.

The statement quoted Bishop Apochi as expressing profound sadness over the incident and urging Christians and people of goodwill to support the family through prayers.

“The Catholic Bishop of Otukpo Diocese, Most Rev. Michael Apochi, expresses deep sadness over the incident and calls on all Christ’s faithful within the Diocese and people of goodwill to offer earnest prayers for the seminarian’s quick and safe release,” the statement said.

The Bishop assured members of the Diocese that every effort was being made to secure the release of the abducted seminarian.

“The Bishop also assures the faithful that efforts are being intensified to secure Mr. Kelvin Ochai’s freedom,” the statement added.

The Diocese also remembered other victims of abduction across the country, committing them to divine protection.
“The Diocese commends the abducted seminarian, along with all other victims of kidnapping across Nigeria, to the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, praying for their speedy and safe release from the hands of their abductors,” the statement read.

Reacting to the incident, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed the development, saying investigations had commenced into the matter.
