Government vows to address safety and wellbeing issues affecting Christian community

The Federal Government has given assurances to Christians that it is fully aware of their concerns regarding insecurity and other socio-economic challenges plaguing the country, and has pledged to continue engaging with them to address issues of safety, welfare, and economic opportunities.

This assurance was given by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, during a meeting with the National Executive Council of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Abuja.

The meeting took place amidst ongoing concerns among Christian leaders about insecurity, freedom of worship, access to justice, and the rising cost of living.

According to Akume, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu acknowledges the concerns of Christians and other Nigerians regarding security, equal opportunities, religious freedom, and participation in national development.

Akume stated that the administration recognises the legitimate concerns of Christians and other citizens regarding safety, equal opportunities, freedom of worship, access to justice, and participation in national development, and will continue to engage relevant stakeholders to address these concerns.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation reaffirmed the government's commitment to strengthening institutions responsible for protecting fundamental rights and upholding the rule of law.

The Federal Government, Akume added, remains committed to creating an environment that enables Christians to continue contributing to national development through education, healthcare, humanitarian services, and community development.

Akume acknowledged that Nigeria is still grappling with significant challenges, including insecurity, inflation, youth unemployment, economic uncertainty, and social tensions.

Despite these challenges, he said the country has continued to demonstrate resilience, and the Tinubu administration remains focused on delivering the objectives of its Renewed Hope Agenda.

Akume stated that while some of the government's reforms have required sacrifices from citizens, the government remains resolute in ensuring that the long-term benefits translate into improved living standards, economic opportunities, and sustainable development for all Nigerians.

The government, he further assured, will sustain dialogue with the Christian Association of Nigeria and other faith-based organisations on matters relating to national unity, security, religious freedom, education, youth empowerment, and poverty reduction.

Akume urged Nigerians to embrace peaceful coexistence, stressing that the country's ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity should be a source of strength rather than division.

He commended Christian and Muslim leaders for promoting interfaith dialogue and mutual understanding, and called on religious leaders to continue serving as ambassadors of peace, reconciliation, and national unity.
