Government Unveils Unified Digital Platform to Revolutionize Commerce and Port Activities Nationwide

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has announced that the Federal Government is poised to introduce the National Single Window, NSW, for Trade and Port Operations, a move aimed at streamlining Nigeria's trade processes, enhancing port efficiency, and minimizing delays in cargo clearance.

This centralized digital platform will consolidate all government agencies involved in import and export procedures into a single electronic portal, enabling traders to submit documentation only once, with the information automatically shared with relevant regulatory agencies for approvals.

Under this system, importers, exporters, and regulators will be able to process trade-related documentation through a unified interface, a development that government officials believe will simplify procedures, boost transparency, and improve Nigeria's ease of doing business.

NAFDAC, a key regulatory body responsible for controlling and regulating food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, and packaged water, has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening trade facilitation and regulatory efficiency through the new digital platform.

The agency has played a significant role in the development and operational readiness of the system, and has stated that it is fully prepared for the rollout, according to a press statement.

NAFDAC has invested heavily in digitizing its regulatory processes over the years, including introducing electronic platforms for product registration, permits, inspections, and import and export clearances, laying a strong foundation for seamless integration into the National Single Window framework.

The agency has aligned its digital systems with the National Single Window infrastructure to ensure smooth interoperability and data exchange, as part of preparations for the launch.

Operational guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures are being reviewed and updated to reflect changes arising from the implementation of the new system, while additional steps include strengthening collaboration with other government institutions involved in trade facilitation and border control.

NAFDAC is also training staff for effective use of the platform and updating regulatory documentation on its website, with the aim of achieving improved transparency in regulatory processes, reduced duplication of procedures, and faster cargo clearance at the nation's ports.
