Gbenga Hashim denounces violence against Sowore and demonstrators on Democracy Day

Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, the Accord Party presidential candidate and Co-Chairman of the Movement for Democratic Renewal, has denounced the alleged attack on human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and other protesters during a Democracy Day demonstration.

Olawepo-Hashim, the former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, views this incident as a disturbing trend for Nigeria's democratic landscape, emphasizing the importance of peaceful protest, free expression, and civic participation as core democratic principles.

According to Olawepo-Hashim, Democracy Day should not only commemorate Nigeria's transition to civilian rule but also serve as a reminder to safeguard democratic values such as freedom of expression, justice, and the rule of law.

He believes that democracy is bolstered when citizens are free to express themselves, organize, and demand accountability from those in power, and that suppressing these freedoms undermines democracy itself.

As the co-chair of the Movement for Democratic Renewal, a position he shares with Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero, Olawepo-Hashim asserts that the group was established to protect democratic space and prevent the erosion of civic freedoms.

Olawepo-Hashim has expressed concern over the ongoing harassment of Sowore, including the issue of his seized passport, and is calling for the respect of due legal processes.

The Movement for Democratic Renewal, under his leadership, will continue to mobilize civil society, labour groups, and citizens dedicated to strengthening democratic institutions and safeguarding civic rights.

Olawepo-Hashim warns that Nigeria must not revert to an era where dissent is criminalized and citizens are denied their democratic rights, emphasizing that the defence of democracy is a collective responsibility for all who value freedom and accountable leadership.

He has urged security agencies and relevant authorities to respect citizens' constitutional rights while maintaining public order.
