Gateway Int’l Airport: Game changer for Ogun GDP — Lemo

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Tunde Lemo, has described the newly commissioned Gateway International Airport, in Iperu-Remo, Ogun State, as a transformative project, capable of significantly boosting the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

This came as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday officially commissioned the airport, marking a major milestone in the state’s infrastructure development drive.

Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the ceremony, Lemo commended the President for his support in bringing the project to fruition, noting that the airport represents a critical economic asset for both Ogun State and the nation at large.

He said, “this project represents progress, opportunity, and a new economic pathway for our people. It will create jobs, boost commerce and position the State as a strategic hub for investment”.

Lemo also commended Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for what he described as visionary leadership, while acknowledging the contributions of previous administrations to the project’s realization.

“Governor Dapo Abiodun deserves commendation for his commitment to legacy infrastructure. We must also recognized the contributions of past leaders whose foundations have made these strides achievable,” he added.

Reaffirming his support for the President, Lemo described Tinubu’s ongoing economic reforms as bold and necessary, expressing optimism about their long-term impact.

“Mr. President’s reform agenda requires courage and consistency. I remain fully supportive of efforts aimed at repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth and prosperity,” he stated.

Lemo, however, used the occasion to appreciate the people of Ogun State for their conduct during the President’s visit.

“I sincerely thank our supporters and the good people of Ogun State for their peaceful and respectful conduct. Your cooperation reflects the true character of our State,” he said.

He described the Gateway International Airport as a major boost to Nigeria’s export capacity, particularly in agricultural produce, with the potential to enhance foreign exchange earnings and drive economic growth.

He noted that beyond passenger movement, the cargo-focused facility is expected to strengthen logistics, facilitate trade, and accelerate industrial development in Ogun State.

“With sustained success, the project could position the state among the top three in Internally Generated Revenue within the next five years”.
