Fuel tanker runs over six people, killing them in Ibadan

A devastating incident occurred on Tuesday along the Beere/Agodi Road in Ibadan, where a petroleum truck crushed at least six people to death.

The truck also destroyed no fewer than six tricycles, known as ‘Keke’, in the process, according to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

An eyewitness recounted that the truck's driver lost control of the vehicle at the Beere end of the road, leading to the tragic sequence of events.

The eyewitness described how the truck ran over two tricycles at Beere, killing two passengers, before proceeding towards the Oje Market Road, where it claimed four more lives.

However, another eyewitness, a motorcyclist, disputed the reported death toll, claiming that it exceeded six, and that some unidentified bodies had been placed in body bags.

Several injured individuals were receiving medical attention at various hospitals in the town, with multiple people suffering varying degrees of injuries.

Kamoru, one of the survivors, recalled that he was test-driving his tricycle after picking it up from the mechanic when the accident happened, and although the truck rammed into his vehicle, he managed to survive.

A relative of one of the deceased visited the Divisional Police Station, Mapo, and shared that his brother, who had just named his daughter three days prior, had lost his life in the accident.

The grieving relative expressed his initial hope that his brother would survive, given that he had only lost his legs initially, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, leaving behind a 10-day-old child.

A senior police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed the accident and stated that two of the corpses and the affected vehicles had been taken to the Divisional Police Station in Mapo.

Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Ayanlade Olayinka, also confirmed the accident, but was unable to provide the exact number of victims, either dead or injured.
