Forty-nine people perish from dehydration in Niger's desert region following vehicle malfunction

A devastating incident in the Sahara desert has claimed the lives of 49 people, who perished from thirst after their truck broke down in an isolated district in Niger, according to authorities who released the news on Thursday.

The victims were part of a group returning from Mali to attend a Muslim festival, but their journey took a tragic turn when they ran out of water, as explained by the Agadez governorate in a Facebook post.

The Agadez governorate further clarified that the 49 fatalities occurred in a remote area located more than 80 kilometres west of Assamaka, a region characterized by extreme temperatures and a lack of supply points.

Assamaka is a significant crossing point between Niger and Algeria, and it is also situated near the border with Mali, making it a crucial location in the region.

According to the governorate, the travellers were unable to repair their vehicle despite the efforts of the driver, assistants, and passengers, leaving them stranded in a hostile environment with no access to water, which ultimately led to their demise, and they were subsequently buried in mass graves.

In a remarkable tale of survival, two people managed to escape the ordeal by walking over 50 kilometres to a nearby water source and then proceeding to Assamaka, where they alerted the authorities to the tragic incident.

The desert zone where the incident occurred is a notorious transit point for migrants attempting to travel from African nations to Europe, and it has claimed the lives of many who have succumbed to thirst or starvation in the scorching desert sands.
