Former International Adepoju Opens Up on What He Missed by Not Playing for Real Madrid's Senior Squad

Former Nigerian international Mutiu Adepoju has disclosed that a shoulder injury thwarted his chances of making his debut for Real Madrid's first team in 1992, a opportunity that arose when Mexican striker Hugo Sánchez suffered an injury.

Adepoju was then playing for Real Madrid's reserve side, Castilla, and was on the cusp of being promoted to the senior team, but the injury prevented him from taking the field.

In a recent interview with sports journalist Charles Anazodo, Adepoju recounted his experience, stating that he was part of Real Madrid's second team, Castilla, in 1992, and was considered for the first team after Hugo Sánchez's injury.

At that time, Spanish football rules stipulated that teams could only field three foreign players, with a maximum of four registered in the squad, and Real Madrid had already filled their quota with Hugo Sánchez, Gheorghe Hagi, Robert Prosinečki, and Ricardo Rocha.

Adepoju explained that when Hugo Sánchez was injured, the team wanted to bring him in as a substitute, but he suffered a shoulder injury while playing for the second team, which ultimately prevented him from joining the first team.

The arrival of a new coach after the season further diminished Adepoju's chances, and he was eventually left out of the team's plans, leading to his departure from the club.

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Adepoju noted that if the rules allowed for more foreign players, he would have been part of the first team, given his goal-scoring record for the second team.

Mutiu Adepoju earned 48 caps for Nigeria and played in two FIFA World Cups, and is remembered for his impressive midfield performances for the Super Eagles, particularly during the 1994 and 1998 tournaments.
