Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam has announced his decision to run for the Benue North-East Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections, this time on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Suswam made this revelation during a Monday interview on Arise Television, marking his return to the senatorial race after having previously served in the National Assembly.

The ex-governor, who switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in February, characterized his move as a strategic "political realignment" rather than a decision driven by personal ambition.

He noted that Benue State's political landscape has historically been defined by dominant party structures, with the state having been firmly controlled by the PDP before shifting allegiance to the APC.

Suswam explained that since he entered politics in 1998, Benue State has typically been a place where the people believe in one party, citing the state's 16-year history as a PDP stronghold before its subsequent shift to the APC.

According to Suswam, his decision to join the APC reflects the prevailing sentiment among the people of Benue State, stating that as a "Benue son," he would not go against the principles and philosophy that his people now believe in.

Suswam's options for the 2027 elections are limited by constitutional provisions, making a Senate seat his only viable political office, and as a politician who still wants to contest elections, he has set his sights on the Senate.

The two-term former governor clarified that he cannot run for governor again due to constitutional restrictions, leaving the Senate as his only viable option for continued political participation.
