Folarin's goal secures vital 1-0 victory for Ikorodu City against Rivers United

Ikorodu City FC clinched a crucial win over Nigeria Premier Football League leaders Rivers United FC, thanks to a 52nd-minute goal from substitute Temitope Folarin, securing a 1–0 victory at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.

The match, which was part of the league's Matchday 30, saw Ikorodu City start strongly, but Rivers United's defence held firm throughout the first half, keeping the hosts at bay.

The introduction of Folarin by coach Bright Ozadegbe in the 46th minute, replacing Dennis Mse, proved to be a game-changer, as Folarin capitalised on a loose ball after the goalkeeper's save from Salami Farouk's effort to score the decisive goal.

According to coach Ozadegbe, the home fans played a significant role in the team's victory, stating that it was a good feeling to defeat a team like Rivers United at home, making the win even more satisfying.

Ozadegbe noted that the team had to remain calm and focused, as Rivers United have a very good coach, and any loss of concentration could have cost them the game.

The coach credited the club's structure and youth development system for their ability to achieve results despite limited finances, highlighting the strong academy that produces players ready for the senior team.

Ozadegbe stated that the team's philosophy remains the same from the academy to the senior side, allowing players to meet expectations when they step up, and praised the boys for executing the plan and deserving the victory.

The team's ambition, according to Ozadegbe, is to remain in the continental qualification zone, and they will do everything possible to stay there.

Match winner Folarin revealed that he aimed to make an impact after coming on, determined to score and grateful that the goal eventually came, after being asked by the coach to be creative and make a difference.

Ikorodu City now sit third with 48 points, four points behind leaders Rivers United, who have recorded 13 wins, nine draws and eight defeats.
