Flooding hits communities in four Yobe LGAs as SEMA begins assessment

Heavy rainfall on Saturday triggered flash floods in parts of Damaturu, Nguru, Machina and Bursari Local Government Areas of Yobe State, damaging homes and prompting emergency response by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

The agency said it had received distress reports from community leaders, security agencies and local government authorities following torrential rainfall that inundated several communities.

Affected communities in Damaturu include Moduri, Abbari Sabon Kwalta, Malari Sabon Kwalta, Pompomari, Sumsumma and Nayinawa. In Nguru, flooding was reported around New Side Best Centre, Balanguwa Road and communities across nine wards. Turbangini and Dinani/Lawanti Ward were affected in Bursari, while Alhaji Madi Street, Hausari and Machina town recorded incidents in Machina Local Government Area.

SEMA said preliminary assessments indicate that several residential buildings sustained varying degrees of damage, while verification is ongoing to determine the number of affected households, displaced persons and possible casualties.

The agency said it has deployed a multi-sectoral Rapid Assessment Team comprising SEMA officials, local government representatives and trained community volunteers to assess the impact and determine immediate humanitarian needs.

The development comes days after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) warned of above-normal rainfall and heightened flood risk in several states, including Yobe, urging residents in flood-prone communities to relocate where necessary and observe safety precautions.

The latest incident also follows concerns previously raised by residents of Nayinawa community on the outskirts of Damaturu over poor drainage infrastructure and recurring flooding, which they said exposes homes to destruction and children to drowning during the rainy season.

SEMA advised residents to remain indoors during heavy rainfall, avoid floodwaters and drainage channels, disconnect electrical appliances where necessary, keep children and vulnerable persons away from flooded areas, and maintain proper hygiene to prevent water-borne diseases after flooding.

The agency urged residents to cooperate with emergency responders as assessments continue, assuring that detailed findings would be released to guide relief interventions.
