Fire service rescues 16 from collapsed building in Kano

The Kano State Fire Service has rescued 16 people after a residential building collapsed in the Dan Dishe area of Kwanar Yashi, Fagge Local Government Area of the state.

The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday, when the building, said to be about 20 by 30 feet, suddenly collapsed.

The spokesperson of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the agency received an emergency call at about 4:32 a.m.

According to him, the distress call was made by one of the service’s staff members, Aminu Sani Warure, who alerted the emergency response unit about the collapse.

Abdullahi said firefighters were quickly dispatched from the service headquarters to the affected area.

“Upon receiving the report, men of the Service from the Headquarters were immediately mobilised to the scene,” he said.

He explained that the rescue team searched through the debris and successfully brought out 16 people trapped inside the collapsed structure.

“Among those rescued were three children who were found unconscious,” the statement added.

They were identified as five-year-old Affan Yusuf, seven-year-old Hassana Yusuf and nine-month-old Ummulkursum Yusuf.

The fire service spokesperson said the exact reason the building collapsed had not been established.

He added that investigations were underway to determine what led to the incident.

The fire service also urged residents to take building and other safety measures seriously, especially during the rainy season when some structures may become more vulnerable.

The agency advised members of the public to observe necessary safety precautions to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
