Federal Housing Authority extends overhaul of Festac road, locals praise advancements

The Federal Housing Authority (FHA), in partnership with the Lagos State Government and Amuwo-Odofin Local Government, is progressing with phased reconstruction of major roads in Festac Town.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project seeks to reverse decades of infrastructure decay, improve traffic flow, strengthen drainage, and reduce flooding across the estate.

The ongoing phase covers sections of the 2nd and 7th Avenues, including the 3.2-kilometre stretch of 2nd Avenue, as part of an 18-month reconstruction programme.

Drainage construction and resurfacing are also ongoing on sections of 7th Avenue and Agboju Market Road to improve stormwater management and traffic movement.

The FHA had earlier reconstructed the First Gate and 1st Avenue, where solar-powered streetlights were installed before extending the programme to other major roads.

The authority also completed the reconstruction and resurfacing of 5th Avenue to improve accessibility and support economic activities within the estate.

A NAN correspondent, who visited the project site on Monday, observed contractors excavating, grading, and laying asphalt on sections of the affected roads.

The correspondent also observed workers reconstructing drainage channels, compacting road bases, and installing drainage infrastructure.

Traffic moved slowly due to diversions, warning signs, and barriers installed to protect motorists and support construction activities.

Some sections have already been asphalted, while work continues on other stretches.

Festac Town’s roads have deteriorated over the years due to poor maintenance, population growth, and prolonged ownership disputes between federal and state authorities.

The neglect weakened drainage systems, triggered recurring flooding, and left many roads riddled with potholes.

The road network serves hundreds of thousands of residents and motorists daily, providing access to businesses, schools, healthcare facilities, and major routes across Lagos.

Commercial bus driver, Mr Chinedu Okafor, described the rehabilitation as long overdue.

“The roads were in a terrible condition before the repairs started.

n

“We spent more time navigating potholes than driving. The temporary inconvenience is worth it if the work is completed on schedule,” he said.

A resident, Mrs Chioma Dike, said the rehabilitation would improve movement and support businesses.

“Many people avoided some of these roads because of their condition, especially during the rainy season.

n

“We are happy to see work progressing and hope the authorities will ensure the project is completed to a high standard,” she said.

Another resident, Mr John Okafor, urged contractors to sustain the pace of work and minimise disruptions to traffic and commercial activities.

Residents expressed hope that the reconstruction would be completed on schedule to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, enhance road safety, and support economic activities across the estate.
