Federal Government releases travel guidance prior to maintenance work on Kara Bridge along Lagos-Ibadan highway route

The Federal Ministry of Works is urging motorists and other road users to plan ahead and consider alternative routes due to upcoming repair works on the Kara Bridge along the outbound lane of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

This advisory comes on the heels of the ministry's earlier announcement regarding the planned replacement of damaged expansion joints on the bridge, with the Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Engr. Olayiwola Komolafe, issuing a statement on Saturday to inform the public.

The maintenance work is set to commence on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, and will last for two weeks, concluding on March 24, 2026, according to the ministry's schedule.

Motorists travelling from Ikorodu to Mowe, Sagamu, and Ibadan are advised to use alternative routes through Shimawa or Mosinmi to avoid the construction zone.

Meanwhile, motorists coming from Lagos Island are being directed to explore the Epe corridor through Ijebu-Ode to access Sagamu, Ibadan, and Mowe, as a way to bypass the repair work.

Engr. Olayiwola Komolafe cautioned that taking a shorter route does not necessarily mean it will be the fastest, and advised motorists to plan their journeys early, obey traffic management directives, and drive cautiously around the work zone.

The ministry is also appealing to road users to exercise patience during the repair period, acknowledging that the temporary partial closure may cause inconvenience.

The Federal Ministry of Works expressed regret over the potential disruption and appreciated the understanding and cooperation of the motoring public as it works to ensure the safety, durability, and stability of the nation's road infrastructure, according to Engr. Komolafe.

In February, the Federal Ministry of Works had announced a six-week partial closure of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to carry out urgent repairs on expansion joints at Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo–Punch Bridge.

However, the work was later suspended due to heavy traffic gridlock and public outcry, allowing for a review of traffic management measures and improved public sensitisation.
