Federal Government discovers over 840,000 individuals staying in Nigeria beyond their authorized visa period, according to Tunji-Ojo

The Federal Government has revealed that Nigeria is currently grappling with approximately 840,290 visa overstayers within its borders, a figure obtained through the country's revamped immigration tracking system.

According to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, this issue is a significant concern, not only for Nigerians abroad, but also for the country as a whole, as he disclosed this information while speaking on Channels Television on Tuesday.

As of the present day, the upgraded system has identified about 840,290 foreign nationals who have exceeded their permitted stay in Nigeria, as stated by the Minister.

Addressing public concerns over the renewed migration agreement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, which has been criticized as being unfavorable to Nigeria, Tunji-Ojo explained that the agreement is based on reciprocity and national interest, serving as a framework for cooperation between the two countries.

The Minister emphasized that the agreement is not intended to export problems, but rather to collaborate with partners to address a global challenge, and he assured that the administration would not make decisions that undermine the interests of Nigerians, as effective governance is built on trust.

Tunji-Ojo provided further clarification on the agreement, stating that it is not legally binding, but rather serves as a procedural framework to ensure safe, orderly, and dignified migration between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

The Minister also dispelled fears that Nigeria could become a destination for deported individuals from other countries, describing such claims as misinformation, and he categorically stated that there is no provision allowing any country to dump prisoners or asylum seekers in Nigeria.

He gave assurances that such an incident would never occur under the current government, emphasizing that the well-being and dignity of Nigerians are of utmost importance.

The Minister noted that one of the benefits of the arrangement is that Nigerians abroad who are returned under the agreement would be treated with dignity, allowed to manage their assets, and have their rights protected.

In line with international best practices, both Nigeria and the United Kingdom would bear the cost of returning their respective nationals, as added by the Minister.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to disregard misleading narratives, reiterating that the government remains committed to protecting national sovereignty while strengthening global partnerships.
