Federal Government delegation assesses Kwale medical facility for renovation

A team from the Federal Ministry of Health, led by Dr. Abisola Adegoke, Director of Hospital Services, has conducted an inspection of the Central Hospital in Kwale, Delta State, as part of the process to transform the facility into a teaching hospital for the Federal University of Health and Medical Sciences, Kwale.

The visit was aimed at evaluating the hospital's facilities, equipment, and manpower, with the findings set to inform recommendations to be submitted to the Federal Government, marking a crucial step towards the proposed conversion.

Upon arrival in the state, the delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, where Dr. Adegoke praised the state government's cooperation in bolstering medical education and healthcare delivery.

According to Dr. Adegoke, the inspection will guide further administrative actions, including potential agreements and arrangements for the hospital's conversion into a teaching facility, underscoring the importance of a thorough assessment.

The delegation comprised several key officials, including Dr. Okpikpi Okpako, Director of Teaching Hospitals, Dr. Ahmed Saidu, Director/STA, CMHSW, and Dr. Olufemi Adebayo, Head of Secretariat, among others.

The visit was facilitated by Ossai Ossai, a former member of the House of Representatives, and Dr. Ernest Ogbodo, Chairman of the Technical Committee for the hospital's transition, who played a crucial role in arranging the delegation's itinerary.

Deputy Governor Onyeme welcomed the delegation, expressing his appreciation for the Federal Ministry of Health's visit and reaffirming the state government's commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government to enhance healthcare services and medical education.

Onyeme emphasized the importance of the university's presence in the area, stating, "As an indigene of this area, I am pleased about the presence of the university here, and we remain committed to supporting efforts that will strengthen its operations and enhance healthcare services in the community."

At the Central Hospital, Kwale, Dr. Ogbodo introduced the delegation to the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Patrick Ofili, who provided a comprehensive tour of the hospital's various departments and facilities.

The delegation also visited the palace of the Oduosa of Utagba-Ogbe, Nze Isaac Obi, where community leaders reiterated their support for the proposed teaching hospital, highlighting the importance of community backing for the project.

Dr. Adegoke thanked the monarch and the community for their support, emphasizing the vital role teaching hospitals play in training medical professionals and improving healthcare delivery, and noting that the delegation's task was to review the hospital's facilities, equipment, and personnel.

The delegation also visited the temporary site of the university, where they were received by Prof. Nekwu Okolugbo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abel Onunu, marking another key stop on their itinerary.

During the visit, Ossai disclosed that the Umusam community had provided two hostels to support the university's operations and pledged continued support for the institution's growth, demonstrating the community's commitment to the university's success.
