FCT Police hunt driver after vehicle crashes into Byazhin gas plant, sparks fire

The FCT Police Command said on Sunday night that it’s operatives, working in conjunction with personnel of the federal fire service have contained the fire which occured in Byazhin at a cooking gas sales plant.

The Police also noted that a manhunt for the erring driver that caused the fire as a result of driving against traffic is ongoing.

Spokesperson of the command SP Josephine Adeh while making this known said, “On the 27th of September, 2026, at about 6:30 a.m., the FCT Police Command received a distress call from a resident at Liberty Junction, Byazhin, reporting a fire outbreak at a

Cooking gas sale plant nearby.

“Following receipt of the report, a Police team from the Kubwa Police Division was promptly deployed to the scene, where they were met with a raging inferno at the gas plant, which had engulfed nearby shops and other properties.

“The Police team promptly contacted the Federal Fire Service, which responded and aided in containing the fire.

“Preliminary investigations by the Police team revealed that the fire outbreak was caused by the driver of an unregistered Toyota

4Runner Jeep, who was driving against traffic (one-way).

“The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the nearby cooking gas plant, causing an explosion which engulfed nearby shops and other properties.

“The driver and occupants of the vehicle fled the scene immediately.

n

“While the Command is currently on the trail of the erring driver, having established his identity, the fire has been contained and no casualties have been recorded.

“However, a detailed assessment of the value of properties lost in the inferno is yet to be determined.

“The Command assures residents that normalcy has been restored and residents can return to their lawful businesses.

n

“Members of the public are enjoined to remain security conscious and vigilant of their surroundings.
