Fatal inferno claims two lives after fuel truck crashes into dump truck on Lekki-Epe route

A devastating accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, resulting in two people being burnt beyond recognition, after a gas tanker and a tipper truck collided at Tera Ahmed bus stop, Sangotedo, along the Lekki–Epe expressway, Lagos.

The victims were identified as the driver of the tipper truck and his assistant, who lost their lives in the tragic incident.

The fire from the accident also affected three warehouses, 10 roadside shops, including a gym and a generator house, which were damaged by the inferno.

According to Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, the incident was reported at approximately 2:36 a.m., which led to the deployment of firefighters from Lekki Phase II, Oniru and Epe II fire stations.

A 20-tonne tipper truck, which was speeding from the Epe axis, crashed into a stationary 30-tonne gas tanker that had failed to pull off the highway, causing the collision that triggered the fire outbreak.

The fire spread to adjoining properties, but was eventually brought under control, preventing it from reaching a nearby petrol filling station and a fully loaded 33,000-litre PMS tanker.

After the fire was extinguished, rescue teams recovered three Sienna bus cars, one Toyota Corolla car, and a forklift that were parked within the affected properties, in addition to the remains of the tipper truck driver and his assistant.

The gas truck driver escaped the accident without sustaining any injuries, and efforts are currently underway to evacuate the remains of both trucks from the road, with normalcy having been restored to the scene of the accident.
