Fatal collision on Lekki-Epe highway claims four lives, leaves four others hurt after truck smashes into passenger bus

A devastating collision between a truck and a commercial mini bus on the Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos resulted in the loss of four lives and left four others with severe injuries over the weekend, according to reports confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The accident occurred on Saturday opposite Beechwood, Shapati, inward Ajah, involving a HOWO truck with registration number KNN 313 YL and a fully loaded Suzuki commercial mini bus, popularly known as “Korope”.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the articulated truck lost control of the vehicle while in motion, causing it to veer across the carriageway and collide with the oncoming commercial bus carrying passengers along the busy road.

The impact of the collision was fatal, resulting in the immediate death of four male passengers, while four other occupants—two men and two women—sustained severe fractures after becoming trapped in the wreckage of the bus.

LASTMA officials, who arrived promptly at the scene, worked together with other emergency responders and passersby to rescue the trapped victims from the wreckage.

The injured victims were then taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were evacuated and deposited at a morgue by an ambulance belonging to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force, attached to the Elemoro Police Division, maintained order at the scene and ensured the safety of rescue personnel and other road users during the operation.

An investigation into the cause of the accident has commenced, according to the police, who are also searching for the driver of the truck and his assistant, who reportedly fled the scene after the crash.

Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, commended the swift response and collaboration among emergency responders, noting that their timely intervention helped rescue the trapped victims.

Bakare-Oki also urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to exercise caution, adhere strictly to traffic safety regulations, and adopt responsible driving habits to prevent avoidable accidents on Lagos roads.
